More than half of the world’s population now lives in urban areas. At the same time there is a higher occurrence of human-induced and natural urban disasters, and increasing numbers of displaced migrating to cities and towns. How can the humanitarian and international community respond more effectively to humanitarian challenges in the context of cities, informal settlements, and slums?
The Urban Humanitarian Action and Response Course is a one-week training organized jointly by the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA) and the Urban Studies Program at Fordham University. This course will provide an overview of global urbanization trends and explore the challenges created by urban disasters, particularly in areas that receive a high number of displaced and unregistered populations. It focuses on the hurdles faced by vulnerable populations in cities and urban settlements and examines how the humanitarian community can better prepare itself for response in these complex situations. The course will analyze the current humanitarian response within these urban settings, while discussing existing best practices and potential opportunities to increase the resilience and sustainability of affected communities. Discussion and debate with experts on disasters, populations at risk, and the urban context will identify new areas of best strategies and practices.
The course fee is $1,600. Upon completion, students will earn two-credit hours through Fordham University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. These academic credits can be applied towards Fordham’s Master in International Humanitarian Action. For those who do not wish to receive formal academic credit, the cost is $913 USD. Participants who choose not to take the course for academic credit will receive a certificate of attendance.
