OpEx Bravo Applications are now open:

Operational Exercise Bravo (OpEx Bravo) is a large-scale inter-agency emergency simulation exercise that provides dynamic ‘hands-on’ experience in a complex and high pressure environment and increases the emergency response capability of the global IT humanitarian community.

OpEx Bravo allows participants’ to gain practical experience with the technical solutions actually deployed by the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC), including telecommunications. satellite connectivity and networking. Participants’ work in teams’ to deploy equipment and services under challenging conditions and within realistic timeframes. OpEx Bravo 2016 is open to all humanitarian personnel with IT, telecommunications and electrical skill sets.

We invite UN agencies, NGOs and Stand-by Partners to nominate suitable candidates to participate in OpEx Bravo 2016, to be held from September 12th to 18th, 2016, at the THW Bundesschule in Neuhausen near Stuttgart, Germany.

Training Goals

The goal of this operational exercise is to give solid, hands-on field experience to ICT technicians and team leaders in a complex, high-pressure environment. Participants will work in teams to deploy ICT services and equipment under challenging conditions and timeframes. This exercise allows participants to gain practical experience with the technical solutions adopted by the ETC for emergency response. The scenarios cover IT, telecoms and electrical skillsets, including satellite connectivity and networking.

Operational Activities:

The exercise will require the participants to complete a number of technical and management objectives, and go through many non-technical experiences. In general:

  • Plan and coordinate the provision of agency specific and inter-agency services.
  • Deploy multiple distinct sites, providing local LAN, WLAN and electrical services.
  • Deploy satellite connectivity, including the emergency.lu solution
  • Connect the sites using wireless links using the ETC response solution design.
  • Deploy VHF and HF services, with Calling, Working and NGO channels.

Non-Technical Activities:

  • Participate in local ICT Working Group and other Cluster and Coordination meetings.
  • Participate in global ETC teleconferences.
  • Negotiate a border crossing while carrying technical equipment.
  • Respond to a medical and security situations.
  • Use field skills.

Accommodation and food costs will be met by THW; however, organizations are requested to fund their respective participant’ travel and incidental costs for the exercise.
