The MSc degree in International Health qualifies for a broad variety of executive positions in the field of International Health. Former graduates are employed by national and international health institutions, Ministries of Health, universities and research organisations, NGOs and in development aid inter alia. Activities range from disaster relief to research and management.
The Master of Science programme in International Health is a flexible modular programme, which may be studied full-time over two years (the study period may be up to one year shorter if relevant professional experience [see below] has been obtained already before the studies) or part-time. It consists of (i) the core course, (ii) selected advanced modules, (iii) one year professional experience in low- or middle-income countries (LMIC), and (iv) the Master thesis.
Core course (20 ECTS credit points): 3.5 months full time study about the principles and concepts of International Health with a focus on concepts and research methods, health problems and health systems. The successful completion of the core course enables to proceed to advanced modules
Advanced modules (min. 20 ECTS credit points): To deepen knowledge on selected topics and to build specialisation there are over 120 modules in the tropEd network (www.troped.org) students can choose from. A minimum of 10 ECTS credit points must be obtained at Charité
Relevant professional experience (20 ECTS credit points): One year of professional experience in LMICs has to been gained before the start of the Master’s thesis. Relevant professional experience that was gained before the studies of the Master’s programme can be recognised if the experience was gained after the first qualifying professional degree.
Master thesis (30 ECTS credit points): A supervised research project on a wide variety of topics related to International Health and formats ranging from experimental design with primary data collection to literature review. Graduates receive an MSc degree in International Health from Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
How to register:
Students are recruited from a variety of backgrounds relevant to International Health such as medical doctors, health scientists, nutritionists, biologists, social scientists, psychologists, economists etc. The programme is open to applicants worldwide. Applicants from LMIC are particularly encouraged.
The minimum entry requirements are: BSc (minimum of 3.5 years) in a health-related field (for BSc graduates with 3.0 years special arrangements apply – please refer to our website). English proficiency certificate equivalent to a TOEFL score of 550 paper /213 internet /80 online, or IELTS score 6.
