Peace-promoting planning and implementing of project

Many of the countries in which specialists are engaged in development cooperation work, humanitarian aid and peace work are threatened by instability, and confronted with the task of managing conflicts of the most diverse nature.

Above all, projects undertaken in conflict or post-conflict regions run the risk of being inadvertently drawn into the conflicts, or of escalating existing tensions through unintended negative effects of their activities. This not only endangers the project goals and the safety of its workers, but also puts the local population at risk.

In recent years, various instruments have been developed for the early recognition and reduction of negative consequences of projects and interventions. This seminar provides an overview of the most common methods of conflict-sensitive planning, monitoring and impact analysis, together with their respective strengths and weaknesses. Participants practice the implementation of these methods by means of practical examples and case studies.

  • The bearing of the conflict context on projects (e.g. conflict identification)
  • Models for the analysis of risks and undesired consequences (“Do No Harm” and “Reflecting on Peace Practices”)
  • The current state of theory and practice in conflictsensitive planning, orientation and impact analysis (PCIA, “logframe”, “Outcome Mapping”)
  • Limits and potential of the various methods
  • Practical examples
