In violent conflicts many people experience loss, suffering and injustice. Great numbers of traumatised people, the handing down of old conflict divisions or the reintegration of former combatants into society often pose huge challenges for large parts of the population. In addition, difficulties in distinguishing between perpetrators and victims can give rise to legal, social and psychological challenges. The formation of a reliable legal system, the development of a culture of memory and the rehabilitation of the sense of a shared past in the public sphere all have a role to play here.

This seminar will examine the complexity of the many tasks and actors that await a society which has been shattered by war and violence, after a peace treaty has been signed. Practical examples will also show some of the opportunities and challenges encountered in local project work.

  • Process of disarmament, demobilisation, reintegration rehabilitation (DDRR)
