Making more effective use of traditional and new media for peace work
Civic initiatives often receive little attention in the media (print, television, radio), and thus among the broader public. As someone involved in a peace project, how can you communicate your news in a way that captures the interest of the media? Furthermore: how can you ensure that your message is not manipulated in a way which might endanger the success of the project?
In addition, social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc.) play an increasingly important role in contemporary public relations, and are of central importance in both campaigning and opinion formation. Putting new media to good use can help to achieve project goals more quickly and efficiently. At the same time, it is important to make careful use of them in order to avoid potential negative consequences for one‘s project.
The seminar examines the connection between traditional media work and the numerous possibilities opened up by new media, and shows how the two can be brought into relation with one another. It clarifies the particular importance of media work for initiatives and campaigns in the specific context of peace and advocacy work.
